FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS
Q:
What causes a subluxation? (A misalignment
in the spine)
A:
Accidents, injuries, and inherited spinal weaknesses are common causes
of subluxations. They can also be caused by poor sleep habits, poor
posture, obesity, stress, having a sedentary lifestyle, and too little
rest.
Q:
How is a subluxation corrected?
A:
Chiropractors treat subluxations with a hands-on technique called a
spinal adjustment. This is a procedure that involves applying a specific,
short, quick thrust to the vertebrae (bone of the spine) in order to
realign or unlock it’s joints. We at Foltz Family Chiropractic
also use multiple techniques. We understand that what technique works
for one patient may not work for another.
Q:
Does the adjustment hurt?
A:
Most chiropractic adjustments are painless; in fact, the adjustment
may feel good and can relieve the pain. It may even cause a brief euphoria.
If the patient had had a recent injury, the adjustment could cause irritation
of inflamed tissue and result in some discomfort. The adjustment could
cause a slight bit of soreness, similar to how one would feel after
exercising when he or she had not exercised for a long time.
Q:
How old should a person be before receiving chiropractic
care?
A:
People of all ages are candidates for chiropractic care. Dr. Foltz has
well over 100 hours of post-graduate hours in chiropractic classes to
better care for his young patients. He also has 25 years of experience
treating geriatric patients. It is not uncommon to see new born babies
and patients in their 90’s in Dr. Foltz’s office.
Q:
Should I go to a chiropractor if I feel fine?
A:
Just because you feel well does not mean you are well. Your chiropractor
can recognize and detect problems before they develop into more serious
conditions. Adjustments may help to maintain and support a healthy spine.
Regular checkups can help prevent small stresses from becoming major
health concerns.
Q:
Does an adjustment have to make a noise to be
effective?
A:
No. While it is true that patients will commonly hear a “pop”
during an adjustment, it is not related to the treatment’s effectiveness.
There is a lubricant within the joint that is called synovial fluid.
When an adjustment is given, there is a sudden drop in pressure within
the joint space which causes gases to escape from the fluid, resulting
in the “pop”.
Q:
How does chiropractic care help pregnant women?
A:
Pregnancy places additional weight and stress on a woman’s body.
Posture is affected because of the additional weight in front. Chiropractic
can help relieve pregnancy – related low back and leg pain, upper
back pain, and even headaches and nausea.
Q:
Is it true that chiropractors do not prescribe
medication or perform surgery?
A:
Yes. Chiropractors do not prescribe medication or perform surgeries.
They believe the body has the ability to heal itself, so treatments
are designed to encourage proper healing. Dr. Foltz has years of experience
to know what conditions may need to be addressed by medical doctors
and he will recommend or refer to medical doctors when necessary.
Q:
Can it help me?
A:
Only a consultation with the doctor could answer this question. Here
is a list of conditions for which chiropractic can be effective.
